In December 2025, the City of Portland formalized a partnership with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) to bolster the city’s climate resilience. This collaboration focuses on protecting the working waterfront and coastal areas from sea-level rise and advancing sustainability goals, including infrastructure electrification. The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) has initiated the Clean Ports Planning Project, targeting the electrification of operations at four Maine ports, including Portland. Portland and South Portland are celebrating five years since adopting the One Climate Future plan, which aims to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 and achieve 100% clean energy for municipal operations by 2040. Over 70% of the plan’s strategies are currently underway, demonstrating significant progress in regional climate action.
