In the heart of Portland, Maine, a unique initiative is making significant strides in strengthening community bonds and ensuring that all residents feel a sense of belonging. The Natural Helpers program, launched by the Office of Economic Opportunity in February 2020, is designed to bridge the gap between residents and the resources available to them by identifying, training, and empowering local community members.
The program brings together trusted, community-rooted leaders and organizational partners to tackle complex issues, challenge perceptions, and strengthen critical thinking through rigorous experiential learning. Through specialized trainings, mentorships, and direct financial support, the fellowship equips participants with the education and connections needed to address the ever-evolving needs of their communities.
Participants in the program, known as Natural Helpers, develop skills to become effective community advocates. They learn in detail about the community resources available in Portland and make connections with other community and organizational leaders to share challenges, experiences, and best practices. This intensive and immersive four-month fellowship includes eight full days of leadership training, during which fellows connect deeply with resources in the greater Portland area.
